I am a feminist because I want to live in a world free of oppression, free of violence against women, free of the violence of racism - of genocide. I want to live in a world that is more just. (Image: Two of 3 GBV protesters in front of the Supreme Courts in Guyana, SA, 2020).

As Workshop planner/facilitator, this provided an opportunity for contributors to share their stories with the university and wider community.

Women in Guyana (many Indigenous) have large farms and 'kitchen gardens'. Some drive the bulls; Others carry bow and arrows to defend themselves as they walk for hours along deserted dirt and potholed roads to do a days work. Finding a path through the ruins of Great Zimbabwe

Empowering women to dream big! (Picture: Me with students at the Women's University in Africa, Zimbabwe). I was told that my students could be recognized from the way they stood in the hallways! They learned that the "personal is political".

Written Testimonials

One of the very first courses I took as a freshman in Brooklyn college, CUNY, was with Dr. Bullen. In her class, whether it was through holding discussions on the contemporary issues facing our society, encouraging us to take part in cultural events, or having us exercise our critical enquiry and thinking skills by writing about diverse topics such as gender and racial inequality, Dr. Bullen nurtured her students' academic growth and guided us through the complex ethos of our times.

Hello Good Doc,

I hope I find you well. I had to share my excitement with you. The 4th, November  was a memorable day for the University. The WGS class proved to be more than receivers of knowledge, but active participants. We organised a lecture on the 16 days of activism against GBV. We had presentations, drama, testimonials and entertainment from that lady we went with to Mutoko and yes one of the student's from the sociology class. These activities were a highlight of GBV and how essential WGS has been, in making us aware, and active participants in sharing knowledge.

The event was attended by the Pro-Vice Chancellor  and others and they stayed till the last act, this was 10am to 1pm, they were intrigued. My colleagues handled business like professionals, I only wish you could have been around to witness the transformation in the class. Mature agents of change, and they delivered the message loud and clear "WGS is the brand for WUA" Thank you for turning our heads around to face the reality of being active participants of change.

We miss you dearly and pray that all is well with you.

Much luv

When I came to the Women’s University in Africa I only wanted to get my degree and go find a job afterwards. Then in my First year, second semester, I met Dr Bullen and my life changed. In her course, "Modern African Women’s voices in Film and Literature" I discovered a way of lecturing which is uniquely Dr Bullen’s as well a new way of writing. It is then that I discovered that I had a passion for writing and I was shockingly quite good at it . As a class we were fortunate to have her in our Second year First semester as well as our Second year Second semester so I was fortunate to have her groom and develop my new found talent. As a result of her brilliance, a student who came to WUA only to just get a degree has managed to achieve quite a lot.

During the International Women’s Day celebrations I was asked to write an article about gender parity which would then be posted on the WUA website. My article managed to get me an invite to the International Women’s day celebrations hosted by WUA at the Rainbow Towers. I really enjoyed the glitz and glam at the event. As of now I write articles for the People’s Voice a weekly newspaper. My articles at People’s Voice connected me to a brilliant and accomplished writer, who approached me and asked me to write articles for their blog in the UK.  Doors and opportunities keep on opening for me and I am grateful to Dr. Bullen who had the time , skill and patience to identify a hidden talent within me.
